TABBY

[PRINT DESIGN _HARVARD GSD // FALL 2023]

Inspired by Beverly Buchanan’s work with tabby concrete in several of her art installations, we chose to further research the history of the material in the South, specifically its ties to slavery and the subsequent meaning it lends to Buchanan’s work. Over the course of our research, we became primarily interested in the inherent rough and unfriendly texture of the material, and its devolution over time as it decays and its roughness intensified. The result was a collection of loose pages with no implied hierarchy or order — each an interpretation of a different tabby ruin’s scale of roughness — and a bibliography of references, emphasizing the hidden nature of the ruins, both in physical location and absence in historical texts.
