The island was conceived as the stage for a celebration of these engineering feats, producing a small-scale city of temporary structures, that acted as an elaborate set for the Golden Gate International Exposition. At the start of WWII, the US Navy took ownership of the island, and for 60 years the island remained untouched by the urban development of San Francisco, suspended in time and maintained by the unequivocal consistency of the US military. But Treasure Island is not immune to the steady changes of climate and time; due to a persistent rate of land subsidence and rising sea levels, the island will soon be completely consumed. In the face of this impending loss, what if we stopped pretending that such vanishing spaces could be saved? Or that changing climates could be resisted? What if we shifted our thinking from preservation to adaptation and transformation? The island’s inevitable unmaking will be a reversal of its initial conception, leaving behind architectural remnants, markers of time passed. It is here that this thesis finds its setting, performing a theatrical unbuilding of program and site. Using the island as a staging ground for its own ruination, opportunities arise to produce a series of temporary performance spaces to be gradually reclaimed by nature, embracing the ephemerality of +0000 Keeley Chism https://keeleychism.com/A-LONG-HOUSE A LONG HOUSE[ARCHITECTURE _HARVARD GSD // FALL 2022] Multi-generational housing is not a new concept for American housing, but it’s popularity at any given time has always been tied to American politics and economics. The introduction of 20th century programs like social security and the economic boom post WWII showed a decline in popularity, however issues like the pandemic in recent years and the predicted end of social security indicate a bigger future for multi-generational living. But what does this mean for people without established generations of family? Beginning with a series of scenarios exploring the various possible scales of multi-generational housing, these narratives are complicated by an investigation into various American housing typologies. Looking closely at the Dogtrot, the Plantation House, and the Shotgun, a number of distinguishing characteristics can be extrapolated and rearranged. The imprint of the Spanish wall becomes a soft enclosure for gathering, the infilled voids of the fragment become an extruded structural system, while the facade adopts a typical Milanese grid composition. The thickened bars of the extrusions define in-between corridor spaces, transformed into restaurants, hotel amenities, culinary school classrooms, and hotel units. Across the site, the third “ruin” uses the layers of the courtyard facades as guides for carved reliefs. The ground floor becomes a hub of the culinary school, featuring a specialty kitchen, opening to the back entrance and bridging the project and Chinatown. These classrooms integrate both the school and the housing above, made available to students and residents alike. The upper floors currently house residents of the neighborhood, and in an effort to maintain their homes, I will only be adapting the facades, increasing access to natural light, while transforming the larger punched window additions into benches, allowing for more gathering on a very narrow external corridor. &nbsp;&nbsp; One explores the architectural make-up of Milan, isolating both the historic expansion of the city through its series of concentric walls and the series of twin typologies found throughout the city that frame the various city gates and piazzas. Over the course of our research, we became primarily interested in the inherent rough and unfriendly texture of the material, and its devolution over time as it decays and its roughness intensified. The result was a collection of loose pages with no implied hierarchy or order — each an interpretation of a different tabby ruin’s scale of roughness — and a bibliography of references, emphasizing I chose to focus on the light interaction and convergence points. Drawing on both sides of the paper, each side a different viewpoint of the still life, I developed a surface that used angled cuts to highlight a common line formed through intersection “hot spots”. These lines and cuts, coupled with the more central form, create the foundation for the earth work design in the Pier 70 site. These lines extend from the tidal garden zone, through the historic Tag Cathedral (Warehouse #6), ultimately leading back onto the land adjacent to the Cathedral. By looking at these lines as cuts into the earth, they propose elevation changes, which could serve as makeshift divides in the large open space to form smaller gathering areas for specific purposes.
